5 Surprising Things Triggering Your Rosacea

As Irish people, we’re known for being pale (at least during the week!) with freckles and rosy cheeks. But just why do some of us get rosier than others!

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a  skin condition in which sufferers experience facial redness, small dilated blood vessels, red papules (bumps), pustules (pimple`s), and/or swelling. It is extremely common across all ages. Typically it occurs across the cheeks but can appear anywhere and it is typically common in older men on the nose.

What causes Rosacea?

The cause of Rosacea still isn’t known, however, there are known triggers that cause Rosacea to flare up;

Hairspray

Yes, Hairspray can flare up rosacea if it comes into contact with your skin (which it likely will). This is due to the alcohol content which will cause the blood vessels to flush. Many people who do not knowingly suffer from Rosacea can sometimes suffer from rosy cheeks while drinking alcohol

Tip:

Try hair gel or pump sprays that contain no alcohol

Food

Food like anything can be a common trigger for different people however it may surprise you how many common foods make the list!

  • Liver
  • Yoghurt
  • Sour Cream
  • Cheese (Except Cottage Cheese)
  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Soy Sauce
  • Yeast Extract (Bread Is Ok)
  • Vinegar
  • Eggplant
  • Avocados
  • Spinach
  • Including Lima, Navy Or Pea
  • Citrus Fruits, Tomatoes, Bananas,
  • Red Plums, Raisins Or Figs
  • Spicy And Thermally Hot Foods
  • Foods High In Histamine

Drinks such as alcohol or hot drinks will also flare up.

Weather

Yes, the elements greatly affect our skin whether is make up dry and flaky or sunburnt. Rosacea sufferers should look out for sun, strong winds, cold, and humidity. So basically everything but rain or a mild day.

Stress

Stress is a detriment to so many aspects of our lives it’s not surprising it affects our skin. Our skin shows us what’s going on in our body and mind so flare-ups such as acne or flushing are common.

Skincare

Up until recently, there was no skincare that was proven to help with Rosacea. Harsh chemicals or very strong acids like alcohol, sulphates, or menthol cause our skin to flare up and react.  Many people would rush to ‘natural’ or homemade ingredients, however, witch hazel is known to be one of the worse flare-ups for rosacea sufferers!

Much of this will be trial and error until you can figure out what triggers affect you, in the meantime, a skin consultation along with an acid skin peel can help you maintain your skin and combat inflammation. Most recently Zo Skin Health released one of the first Rosacea targeted products to the market which is getting great results! Rozatrol among others things contains lactic acid to help ease redness. Treatments such as Micro Needling with the Rejuvapen can help to strengthen the skin so triggers don’t affect it as much.
