Hyperhidrosis : Do I Sweat Too Much?
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is when a person sweats an abnormal amount typically in the armpits, palms, and soles of the feet.
How Do I Know If My Sweatings Not Normal?
Typically we sweat when it’s warm, after exercise or emotional stress, with Hyperhidrosis as well as excess amount of sweat we may sweat at other times. Excess sweat can be very debilitating and embarrassing! Even if there is no odour sweat easily sinks through clothes and can very obvious particularly when the weather is not warm! Light fabrics like mens shirts show off sweat in patches and regularly having to change your shirt may be an indicator of hyperhidrosis.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
There are actually 2 different types of Hyperhidrosis!
Unfortunately Primary Hyperhidrosis is unknown excessive sweat! This is when there is no obvious reason for the Hyperhidrosis. It is thought to be a fault with your nervous system. Your sympathetic nervous system is responsible for creating your sweat. Typically we sweat as your nervous system sends a signal from your brain to your body telling it to produce sweat so your body can cool down.
With Hyperhidrosis your nervous system sends these signals to sweat even though your body is not over hot/ These sweat glands are typically in the hands feet and armpits!
With Secondary Hyperhidrosis the excessive sweat is caused by an underlying medical condition such as:
- Low blood Sugar
- Overactive Thyroid
- Reactions to medications
For these it is best to speak with your doctor and see what they recommend.
What Can Fix Hyperhidrosis?
There are a number of ways to help with Hyperhidrosis however the effectiveness will depend on how sever your sweating is.
Prescribed Anti Perspirant
Basic anti perspirant are almost always ineffective at helping with Hyperhidrosis. Stronger strength antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can be a much better help. The aluminum in the antiperspirant clogs the sweat glands preventing the sweat for escaping the gland. Different products will have different strengths of aluminum and it is recommended to start with a low dose an increase when needed. Depending on different areas of your body different strengths will be needed.
Botox has proven very effective on Hyperhidrosis and has helped improved sufferer’s quality of life.
By Injecting Botox under the armpit (or even on the hairline) we can drastically reduce your sweat. Botox works by numbing the muscles it is injected to so by injecting it in the muscles that surround the sweat glands we stop the sweat from being squeezed out! If the sweat is not allowed to be produced then our sweat will be greatly reduced!
Using the official Botox ® product the treatment will take 10 – 14 days to kick in after your injections. Typically it lasts 4 months but depending on your own situation could last longer or shorter.
Be aware that other clinics may use cheaper products which do not last as long as the original Botox®.
