Micro Needling : The Roller Vs The Derma Pen

Microneedling stimulates the production of new collagen in the skin by creating a ‘controlled damage’ and encourage your skin to heal itself.  This improves skin tone and texture, treating a variety of skin conditions.

What is Medical Microneedling?

Microneedling is becoming one of the most popular Skin Treatments available! And it’s not hard to see why when you see the results!

Micro Needling can be used nearly all over the body on:

  • Scars
  • Acne Scars
  • Stretch Marks
  • Pigmentation
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin-strengthening
  • Sun damage
  • Overall Skin Rejuvenation on the face, decolletage, and even hands.

There are a number of different ways we can do Microneedling including in a PRP treatment but the basic technique is the same.

  • Step one we numb the skin using numbing cream.
  • Step two we add a peptide serum or a growth factor serum to the face or the area being treated.
  • Step three we go over the area with the Microneedle. The microneedle creates a controlled damage to the skin encouraging it to heal itself!
  • Step four We add a copper repair serum to the skin to help calm the skin.
  • Step five we follow with a calming face mask to help remove redness quicker.
  • Medical Micro-Needling is an extremely safe and quick procedure though people can sometimes be put off by its technical name! It’s nothing to be afraid of and it gives fantastic results that are noticeable from the first treatment.

What’s the difference between a Derma Roller or Derma Pen?

Micro Needling can be done in a few different ways – the most popular of these is the Derma Roller or Derma Pen.

The Dermaroller is a manual roller that contains nearly 200 tiny needles. This is pushed back and forth over the area creating the microchannels.

A Dermapen (also called the Rejuvapen) is a hand operated stamp machine that contains 9 tiny needles.

This is a powered machine that allows you to change the depth of the needle in the middle of treatment. Meaning you can go deeper on areas that need it such as Acne scars on the face.  The more precise tip means that you can also perform spot treatments, unlike the Derma Roller where the area and surrounding need to be treated.

Which should I use?

Depending on what your skin concern is either could be suitable.

For more precise treatment such as Acne Scars or fine lines, the Rejuvapen allows you to only target those areas if you wish.  Using a derma pen also allows us to get close to sensitive areas such as the under eye area by using a smaller needle length.

To find out exactly what treatment works the best for you it’s important to have a consultation with the Skin Health Specialist who will be performing the treatment. They can guide you on what treatment works best for you.

At Amara, we offer micro-needling treatments with the Rejuvapen® collagen induction device which is one of the most advanced micro needling derma pens. We use this for all of our in-clinic micro-needling treatments.
