8 Acne Myths: What Are You Still Believing?

We hear so much about Acne that it’s hard to tell if we are doing the right thing for our face.

So What’s true and what’s not?

Only Teenagers get Acne

Although Acne is most common with teenagers, 1 in 5 adults between 25 and 44 suffer from Adult Acne. There are many different reasons why we suffer from Acne such as Hormones, Stress, build up of oil, wrong Facial products being used etc.

You should dry out a spot with toothpaste

Many people’s go to when they get a spot is to bring out the Colgate! Although this does dry out the spot it also dries out your skin. It can leave patches of extremely dry skin on the face and the spot is likely to keep recurring as it is not being treated. The best way to treat a spot is using a Salicylic Acid wash. Among Acne sufferers Salicylic Acid is a hero product.

Your diet doesn’t affect your Acne

Although you could have an excellent diet you can still get spots. However, depending on your you some foods can affect your skin.

Many people find that Sugar, Gluten and Dairy clog oil glands and cause inflammation in their skin! Certain allergies can also flare up blemishes.  Foods that promote good skin are the obvious ones such as:

  • Dark Berries
  • Seeds (i.e Pumpkin)
  • Beetroot
  • Peppermint
  • Nuts
  • Tomato
  • and of course Water

Chocolate causes spots

There’s no actual evidence that Chocolate causes spots! However, a high sugar diet can lead to a buildup of oil causing breakouts. Chocolate in moderation like everything shouldn’t affect your skin, go with dark chocolate which has a lower sugar content if you want that bit more.

You should exfoliate every day

Exfoliating every day with a harsh scrub can dry out your skin. Why not try an Enzyme wash for daily use?.

The sun cures Acne

The sun is generally bad for your skin and it is important to use a SPF every day no matter the weather. Strong sun can clear up your spots momentarily but will encourage them to come back later if you are not properly protected.

You should pop your spots

It’s very tempting for some people to pop their spots, the number online only proves this!  Popping a spot can push the bacteria back deeper into your skin again promoting Acne. It can also lead to Acne Scarring or permanent blemishes.

Acne means Dirty Skin

This is completely untrue, Acne is caused by a variety of reasons (see above) and over washing your face or using products with chemicals too harsh for your skin can actually cause Acne. It is important to wash your face morning and night with products that are suited to your skin.
